Ghost Cornhole Practice and How to Play

Ghost cornhole is a type of practice game cornhole players use to help improve their skills. Ghost cornhole is a single player game in which a cornhole player plays against the “ghost”. The ghost always throws a set amount of points each round. The cornhole player tries to out score the ghost’s points each round. Count the net points after each round. The cornhole player wins if their net points reach 21 before the ghost does. If the ghost receives 21 net points before the player does, then the ghost wins.

How to Play Ghost Cornhole?

Ghost cornhole is a single player game in which a cornhole player plays against the “Ghost”. A cornhole player picks a cornhole ghost level from 1 to 11 where 1 is the easiest and 11 is the most difficult. When a player chooses a cornhole ghost level of 8, this means that every round of throwing, the cornhole ghost will always score 8 points.

The cornhole player throws 4 bags per round. If the cornhole player makes 3 bags in the hole, and leaves 1 bag on the board, the cornhole player would make 10 points but will receive only 2 points total that round (10 points from player minus 8 points from the ghost equals 2 points for the player). The next round, if the cornhole player only lands 4 bags on the board, the cornhole player will make 4 points and will not receive any points that round. Instead the ghost will receive 4 points that round (4 points from the player minus 8 points from the ghost equals 4 points for the ghost).

From this example, you can see that either the cornhole player or the ghost will accumulate points after each round. Therefore, either the cornhole player or the ghost will reach 21 points first. Whichever reaches 21 points first, wins the game.

Ghost Cornhole Competitions

Yes, you can play Ghost Cornhole with multiple players. Most of the time, this is done via online streaming competitions. For example, you would challenge someone else to a Ghost Cornhole Level 8. You would live stream yourself from start to finish your attempt to play Ghost 8. Your opponent would also live stream their attempt at Ghost 8.

When you live stream, you must have a cornhole score tower presented in your live stream. This will keep track of your score and allow viewers tuning in to see what the score of the game is. In addition, you must live stream from start to finish without interruption. If your live stream stops or is interrupted in the middle of the game, you must restart the live stream from the point of interruption. If the live stream was interrupted in the middle of a throwing round, that round does not count and must be redone since the round was not completed at the time of the interruption. Be sure to always verify rules with your opponent and/or on the platform you are competing on.

So how do you win a ghost cornhole competition? It is determined based on point differential. The player with the highest point differential wins. Point differential can be either a positive or a negative number. It is a positive number if you beat the Ghost and it can be a negative number if the Ghost beats you. Point differential is calculated based on the following equation:

Point Differential = Player's Points - Ghost's Points

For example, if you beat the Ghost 21 to 10, your point differential is 11 since 21 – 10 = 11. If your opponent beats the Ghost 21 to 5, their point differential is 16 since 21 – 5 = 16. Therefore, your opponent would win since 16 is greater than 11.

Another example, if you beat the Ghost 21 to 2, your point differential is 19 since 21 – 2 = 19. If your opponent loses to the Ghost 11 to 21, their point differential is -10 since 11 – 21 = -10. Therefore, you would win since 19 is greater than -10.

What if both players score the same point differential? Well you can either play Ghost 8 again or move up and play Ghost 9. Either way, you must do a rematch to determine the true winner. You will continue to play against each other until one player has a greater point differential than their opponent.

Again, be sure to always verify rules with your opponent and/or on the platform you are competing on.

Tandem Ghost Cornhole

Tandem Ghost Cornhole is similar to crew cup where you have two players on the same team alternating throws in a single round. Instead of 4 players per team like crew cup, it is 2 players per team in tandem cornhole. In tandem cornhole, the first teammate will throw a bag, the second teammate will throw the second bag, the first teammate will throw the third bag and the second teammate will throw the fourth and final bag per round. Once the round is complete, they will walk to the other end of the court and throw back to begin the next round.
