Cornhole Players Cheat by Board Modification
Cornhole players cheat in ghost or virtual cornhole by prepping/modifying their cornhole board surface with furniture spray, hair spray and using microfiber cloths. They make all areas in front of the hole on their cornhole boards slick giving them the best chance of ensure their cornhole bags slide into the hole as easy as possible. They ensure all other areas on the cornhole boards are sticky where they are mostly likely to accidentally throw a bag off the board. We will try our best to educate you on this process in writing but we hope to post a YouTube Video on this shortly to better explain how people are cheating. Below are the steps they take to cheat.
Step 1: Cheaters Prep the Cornhole Boards with Furniture Spray
The first step cheaters take is spraying furniture spray in front of the cornhole board hole. Furniture spray makes the surface of the cornhole board very slick. When they spray the right areas, it improves their chances of making the bag into the hole. They continuously spray around the hole of the cornhole board and to the front two corners of the cornhole board. This process creates a triangular spray pattern. They then spray inside the triangle filling that area with furniture spray as well. They do not spray on the outer left, top or right edges of the cornhole board since they do not want those areas slick. Then they use a clean microfiber cloth to wipe the furniture spray onto the boards and thoroughly inside and around the hole. This ensures their bags fall into the hole very easily. They are careful not to wipe the furniture spray into the other outside areas of the board since they do not want those areas slick. Below are some furniture spray products they use.
QUICK NOTE! There is nothing wrong with someone wiping the entire board down with furniture spray. As long as the entire board is consistent, I wouldn’t call that cheating. It actually makes the entire board very slick and is actually more difficult to play on in our opinion. However, if they only apply furniture spray to certain parts of the board (i.e. just around the hole to make the bags fall in easy) then we would consider that cheating.
Step 2: Cheaters Prep the Cornhole Boards with Hair Spray
The next step cheaters take is using unscented hair spray on the outer left, top and rights sides of the cornhole boards. The hair spray makes the cornhole boards sticky. So if they apply the hair spray in the right areas, it will keep their cornhole bags on the board and prevent them from throwing the cornhole bags off the board.
They spray the hair spray in an evenly manner, preventing blobs of hair spray in some places. Once applied, they take a slightly dirty microfiber cloth and dab the microfiber cloth into the hair spray. This removes any excess hair spray while creating a texture pattern into the hair spray. They do not wipe the hair spray since that would smooth out the hair spray and not provide the stopping effect they want. They ensure the hair spray has plenty of time to dry. Once fully dried, the cornhole board is sticky and does not appear or smell modified.
When the cheater completes these two steps correctly, their cornhole bags slide freely on the furniture spray and stops quickly on the hair spray. Why do they use unscented hair spray? Because it can easily be removed from their cornhole bags if they wash them in the washer. And it doesn’t allow others to smell any scent on their bags.
Below we will discuss cheat prevention recommendations. But if you want to test this method out yourself and provide your own cheat prevention recommendations, here are some unscented hairspray products cheaters use.
Step 3: Cheaters Choose the Right Cornhole Bags to Throw With
Cheaters want to throw with a cornhole bag that has both a slick and stick side such as AllCornhole.com Game Changers. The outer edges of the stick side have slick fabric making it easier for the cornhole bags to fall into the hole instead of catching the hole.
When a cheater modifies their cornhole board, the patch will catch the hair spray section of the board and, in some cases, will help direct the bags to the hole of the board. When you are watching this online, it will appear as if the bag is kicking to the left or right just as it does naturally on some cornhole boards. However, if they miss the hole completely, the cornhole bag will stop at the top or side edges of the cornhole board. If they throw up the middle, the cornhole bags will easily fall into the hole.
If you see a player whose bags slide fast up the middle and fall into the hole quickly but their bags stop quickly at the top and sides of the board, more than likely they are cheating!
How to Prevent Ghost or Virtual Cornhole Cheating
If you want to prevent people from cheating in Ghost Cornhole or Virtual Cornhole, we recommend you require players to record themselves wiping the entire surface of both cornhole boards at the beginning of their online video stream. This will help ensure any board modifications are wiped off thoroughly enough.
HOWEVER, don’t let them fool you when wiping down the boards. Some cheaters will have one side of the cloth sprayed with furniture spray and the other side sprayed with hair spray. If you see them changing sides of the cloth while wiping the cornhole board down, they could be cheating.
